Lead Free Legislation
The 2014 "Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act" modified the "Safe Drinking Water Act" definition of Lead-Free to reduce the health risks associated with the ingestion of lead in water. This law applies to all pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures used for human water consumption.
What are the Lead Limits in Plumbing Products?
• Maximum 0.25 % lead in surfaces of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures that come in contact with consumable water, as determined by a weighted average
• Maximum 0.2 % lead in solder and flux
Why is Lead-Free Legislation Important?
Lead is found in many types of plumbing products and could have lasting negative impacts on the wellbeing of children and adults.
According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency):
• In babies and children, exposure to lead in drinking water above the legal limits can result in physical and mental developmental delays, including deficits in attention span and learning abilities
• In adults, exposure to lead in drinking water above the legal limits can cause increases in blood pressure
• In adults who drink lead-contaminated water over many years, kidney problems or high blood pressure could develop
